Mathias Ahii Chia

I got a doctorate in science from the Federal University of Sao Carlos, focusing on ecology and natural resources. My areas of interest include ecology, physiology, and biochemistry of algae. These include the response of microalgae and cyanobacteria to modifications in their immediate surroundings, the environmental impacts of pollutants and the bioactive chemicals biosynthesized by higher plants and cyanobacteria, and how the interactions between environmental conditions with pollutants affect different freshwater food chains. We use omics-based techniques to elucidate changes in the response of microalgae and cyanobacteria to changing environmental conditions. The production of sustainable energy from microalgal biomass is another area of interest. Here, growing conditions for various strains are optimized while varying the concentration of different lipid classes, the composition of fatty acids, and the microalgal oils' physical characteristics.
