Dr. Jose Geraldo Nery worked and studied during his graduate studies under the supervision of Professor Anthony K. Cheetham and Professor Yvonne Primerano Mascarenhas at the Materials Research Laboratory at University of California-Santa Barbara (MRL-UCSB) and at the University of Sao Paulo-São Carlos-Brazil,(IQSC-USP) respectively. The focus of his graduate research was on inorganic and sol-gel chemistry aiming the syntheses of molecular sieves for water softening applications, environmental remediation heterogeneous catalysis and detergent production. This research work has involved a great deal of advanced inorganic chemistry , x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and solid state NMR. The results of this research were published in several relevant scientific international Journals related to this field. After finishing his scientific work at MRL-UCSB/IQSC-USP Dr. Nery accepted as post-doctoral fellow position at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) under the supervision of professor Mark Davis. The focus of his work at professor Davis´s group was on computer modeling, organic syntheses of structure directing agents (SDAs), and syntheses of new zeolites . Due to the experience gained at MRL-UCSB and Caltech, Dr. Nery was invited by Professor Michael Tsapatsis to join his research group at University of Massachusetts-Amherst. During his stay at Professor Tsapatsis´s group as associated researcher, he has performed research related to the syntheses and preparation of zeolites membranes for industrial gas separation. It was a very productive and fruitful collaboration and the output of the work was a very important cover paper published on Science. On 2001 Dr.Nery started a completely different and challenging scientific project as associated researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science-Israel in collaboration with Professor Meir Lahav, whom is one of the leading scientist of the world in the field of chirality, solid state chemistry and functional 2 and 3-dimensional crystals. The research at Professor Lahav?s group was focused on problems related to the syntheses and chiral amplification of homochiral oligopeptides. The project involved a great deal of organic, solid state chemistry, polymer chemistry and also modern mass spectroscopy, namely MALDI-TOF and MALDI-TOF-TOF applied to science polymers, and the results of these studies were published at the Angewandtle Chemie Int. Edition and Chemistry: A European Journal. From his experience as a graduate student , post-doctoral scholar and associated researcher working in the highly prestigious Academic Institutions and under the supervision of well-known Professors in their respective fields, Dr. Nery came to develop all the necessary skills to be a productive, energetic and enthusiastic member of the scientific staff of any research institution. After a very rich professional, cultural and personal experience abroad, on 2007 Dr. Nery returned to Brazil, more specifically to the Northeast of Sao Paulo State, and started from scratch a new research group on materials science and nanotechnology at Sao Paulo State University-UNESP. Currently he is an Associated Professor at São Paulo State University ?UNESP in the Physics Department. The main focus of scientific work are related to the zeolite chemistry aiming the application of these materials as heterogeneous catalysts and environmental remediation and biomaterials biopolymers for biomedical applications . Since his returning to Brazil Dr. Nery is intensively involved in scientific cooperation with private companies, seeking for possible technological innovation of their products through science and technology. One of the greatest joy of Dr. Nery is the fact that many of his former students have decided to pursuit their scientific career as researchers in private companies and have also started their own start-ups companies based on the experience gained during their PhD research.
