Resumo

Um dos conjuntos de espécies de taxonomia mais intrincada, dentre os peixes de água doce sul americanos, são os pequenos "tetras" ou "piabas", pertencentes aos gêneros Hyphessobrycon, Hemigrammus, Thayeria, Parapristella e Bryconella, atualmente considerados como "Incertae sedis" ou dentro da subfamília Tetragonopterinae (família Characidae). O presente projeto pretende avançar de forma significativa o conhecimento taxonômico/sistemático das espécies desse conjunto de gêneros, que abarca 184 espécies atualmente reconhecidas como válidas. Um considerável número de espécies dentro desse conjunto de gêneros serão reavaliadas e redescritas, com o objetivo de produzir diagnoses modernas, avaliar a variação geográfica e mapear adequadamente a distribuição de cada espécie estudada. É previsto que muitas espécies novas serão identificadas e descritas no decurso do projeto. Embora esse conjunto de gêneros/espécies muito provavelmente não constitua um grupo monofilético, é aqui argumentado que taxonomia tem uma prioridade lógica sobre reconstrução filogenética e que os esforços conduzidos durante o decurso do presente projeto serão de extrema valia para guiar futuros projetos visando ao estabelecimento de hipóteses filogenéticas sólidas para Characidae.
