Resumo

The proposed workshop will address 'Global Climate Change, Biodiversity and ecosystems'. Specifically, Amazônia, an extensive region in South America (parts of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, etc.), is globally important as a C sink: and climate regulator and is experiencing extensive encroachment from conversion to agriculture, ranching, extraction industries, etc., that impact on the sustainability of biological resources found there. Moreover, climate change is resulting in seasonality shifts with profound, regional impacts. Finally, Amazônia is one of the most impoverished regions of Brazil, so that identification of biological resources and the ecosystem services they provide is critical to the livelihood of people living there. Our workshop will address the scientific challenge of bio-resource inventory at a landscape scale by use of remote sensing. We will explore specific ways that remote sensing can be integrated into investigation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, ultimately to provide input for economic models for regional sustainability. This will involve, and benefit, scientists from a range of backgrounds, including ecology and biodiversity, remote sensing, human geography, and ecological economics. Results from scientific programmers we aim to promote will provide input into government policy for the economic welfare of this impoverished region. The adherence to the thematic project to which I lead refers to the land use and land use and modeling techniques, which will be central to spatial data and the construction of scenarios of changes in land use and impact on local biodiversity. We will structure the workshop around sessions that will: (1) identify specific scientific challenges relating to sustainability of biodiversity and ecosystem services; (2) promote awareness across the whole group of the potential contributions different scientific fields can contribute; (3) develop potential research agendas that make effective use of interdisciplinary approaches to address the complexity of biodiversity and ecosystem series; and; (4) explore stakeholder engagement and use of knowledge intermediaries. The adherence of this workshop to the thematic project that I coordinate refers to the land use and land cover modeling techniques, which will be central to spatial data and the construction of scenarios of changes in land use and impact on local biodiversity.
