Application of Associated Laboratory for the Structural Genomics Program


Our present aims are the cloning, expression, purification and structural analyses of the OppA protein as well as other periplasmic binding components of ABC-typetransport systems involved in peptide, sugar or metallic ions transport found in X. citri and/or X. fastidiosa. Some of them have already been detected in the genome analysis of these bacterial pathogens but others will require additional work to disclose their presence due to low homologies with other known proteins belonging to ABC type transport systems. We believe that based on our scientific expertise in bacterial cell physiology and the training and facilities offered by the new consortium supported by FAPESP in the Structural Genomics Program, it will be possible not only to understand the specific structural features of these proteins, which could help us to understand their precise roles on the bacterial physiology and pathogenicity mechanisms, but also open up new possibilities to develop drugs or treatments able to hold the infection processes in the host plants.
