In this paper, we use minimax methods, comparison arguments, and an approximation result to show the existence and multiplicity of solutions for the following class of problems: [-Delta(1)nu = lambda f(nu) in Omega, nu >= 0 in Omega, nu = 0 on partial derivative Omega, where Omega is a bounded smooth domain of R-N, N >= 1, lambda > 0 is a parameter and the non-linearity f : R -> R is a continuous function that can change sign and satisfies an area condition.
