Abstract

The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is alarmingly increasing worldwide, due to obesity, its most important predisposing factor. Obesity leads to the development of insulin resistance, an elementary condition for the onset of T2DM. The liver plays a crucial role in maintaining glycemic levels by regulating gluconeogenesis (glucose de-novo synthesis) and glycogenolysis (glycogen breakdown) pathways. However, the insulin resistance in the liver impairs its ability to control such pathways, leading to excessive glucose production and release, which results in constant hyperglycemia...
