J. E. Steiner has a degree in Physics from the Instituto de Física da USP (1973), a master and doctorate in Astronomy from the Universidade de São Paulo (1975 and 1979), and a post-doctorate from Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (1979-1982). He has been full professor at USP's Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas since 1990. He was president of the Brazilian Astronomical Society (1982-1984), Treasurer and Secretary General of SBPC (1988-1992), Director of Space and Atmospheric Sciences at INPE (1987-1989), Director of the Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (1997-1999), Secretary of Research Units of the Ministry of Science and Technology (1999-2002), Director of the USP?s Instituto de Estudos Avançados (2003-2007). He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Gemini, SOAR and GMT telescopes. He is currently a member of the CNPEM Board of Directors, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo, the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries (TWAS) and an honorary member of the American Astronomical Society. He coordinated the National Institute of Science and Technology in Astrophysics (2009-2016) and the implementation of the São Paulo Technology Park System (2005-2007). He is coordinator of the GMT-FAPESP project and representative of FAPESP at GMT Founders Board (2015-present date). His current field of research is in Active Galactic Nuclei.
