Rose Satiko Gitirana Hikiji is a professor of the Department of Anthropology at the University of São Paulo (USP) since 2005. Vice-coordinator of LISA (Laboratory of Image and Sound in Anthropology at USP). She is also the coordinator of PAM (group of research in musical anthropology), vice-coordinator of GRAVI (Group of Visual Anthropology) and member of NAPEDRA (Nucleous of Anthropology, Performance and Drama). Visiting scholar at SOAS - University of London in 2017 and visiting researcher at the University of Siena (Italy), from September 2021 to February 2022.Author of the books Imagem-violência - Etnografia de um cinema provocador (Terceiro Nome, 2013) and A música e o risco (Edusp/Fapesp, 2006), co-author of Lá do Leste (Humanitas, 2013), and co-editor of A experiência da imagem na etnografia (Terceiro Nome, 2016), Bixiga em Artes e Ofícios (Edusp, 2014), Antropologia e Performance (Terceiro Nome, 2013), Escrituras da Imagem (Edusp, 2004) e Imagem-Conhecimento (Papirus, 2009). She has made diverse ethnographic films, including "Afro-Sampas"(2020), Woya Hayi Mawe - Where are you going to? (2018) and Tabuluja (2017), both co-directed with Jasper Chalcraft, Violão-Canção: Brazilian Soul (2016; with Chico Saraiva), The Eagle (2015, with Alexandre Boudreault-Fournier), Fabrik Funk (2015, with Alexandre Boudreault-Fournier and Sylvia Caiuby Novaes), Art and the Street (2011, with Carolina Caffe), Quebrada's cinema (2008) and the webdocs Lá do Leste ( and Bixiga em Artes e ofícios ( was the vice-director of Centro de Preservação Cultural (CPC-USP) (2010-2014) and member of the editorial board of the journals Revista CPC (2010-2014), Revista de Antropologia (2007-2010) and Sexta-Feira - Antropologia, Artes e Humanidades (1997-2006). She's member of the editorial board of GIS - Gesture, Image and Sound - Journal of Anthropology and of JAVEM - Journal of Audiovisual Ethnomusicology,.Currently she conducts the research project Being/Becoming African in Brazil, in the Tematic Project "Local Musicking - New pathways for ethnomusicology" (Fapesp grant 2016/05318-7), in which she was also a Principal Investigator.
