Raquel F Gerlach is a DDS that has a Master's Degree in Oral Biology from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1998), and a PhD in Cell Biology from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2000). Has experience in Cell and Molecular Biology, acting on the following subjects: MMP-9, MMP-2, dental enamel, gelatinases and the use of teeth as biomarkers of exposure to both essential and toxic metals, particularly lead (Pb), chronic inflammatory diseases and MMPs. Dr Gerlach's studies on the recovery of enamel-specific peptides resulted in the wide-spread use of enamel peptides to characterize the biological sex of ancient individuals and the use of enamel proteome to set new species of animals (including a new human) based on the enamel peptide sequences in a time (> 1 million years) when DNA is not adequate for analyses anymore.
