Born in São Paulo, Brazil in January 21, 1943, attended elementary school in Colégio Santo Alberto, high school in Liceu Pasteur and studied Chemistry (B.Sc., 1964; Ph.D., 1970 under Pawel Krumholz) in the University of São Paulo. Post-doctoral fellow in the University of Colorado Medical Center (Denver, USA) and in the University of California, Davis (1972-4), research fellow in the Unilever Research Port Sunlight Laboratory (UK, 1976). Professional activities: Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor in the University of São Paulo (1965-80), Associate Professor and Professor of Chemistry in the University of Campinas (1980-present), was the Head of the Institute of Chemistry (1994-8) and Vice-Rector of the university (1998-2002). Also taught at the Universidade Estadual Paulista in Araraquara and USP Medical School in Ribeirão Preto, federal universities of Ceará and Bahia in Brazil, Universities of Concepción (Chile), Buenos Aires (Argentine) and Pisa (Italy). Long-term consultant to Pirelli (Brazil), Bunge, Oxiteno, Citrosuco Fischer, Orbys and Montana, also did short-term consulting and research services to many other companies, e.g. Petrobras, IBM, Copene, Braskem. Currently, Director of the National Nanotechnology Laboratory at CNPEM, Campinas. Research: Ph.D. thesis on metal-metal bond equilibria in aqueous solution), post-doc in the universities of Colorado and California. In 1976 started activities in Colloid and Surface Science that remained the main research area since and is now diversified into Materials Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Electrostatics. Published 220 articles and letters in journals indexed in Web of Science, 17 book chapters. Inventor listed in 18 patents on various products and processes derived from original research. Patents were licensed to four different companies (aluminium phosphates to Bunge, rubber nanocomposites to Orbys, cationic latex to Ind. Química Taubaté and PET nanocomposite to MG). Advised 34 Ph.D. thesis and 39 M.Sc. dissertations in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, in the Universities of Campinas, São Paulo and Bahia. Professional societies: Vice-president, President and Council (current) of the Brazilian Chemical Society, General Secretary of the Brazilian Association for the Advancement of Science (SBPC), President of the Brazilian Society for Microscopy and Microanalysis, Member of the Board of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the São Paulo State Academy, Council of the International Association of Colloid and Interface Science (IACIS, The Netherlands). Brazilian National Representative before IUPAC (2009-2014). Awards: Fritz Feigl (Chemical Council), Simão Mathias (Brazilian Chemical Society) and Eloisa Mano (Brazilian Polymer Association) medals. Prizes for innovation from the Brazilian Association for the Chemical Industry and Finep. From CNPq (funding agency from the Brazilian Federal Government). Álvaro Alberto Prize, the largest prize then given in Brazil for a scientist (2007). ?Technology Personality of the Year? from the São Paulo State Engineers Union (2010) and Anísio Teixeira, from the Ministry of Education (2011). Rhone-Poulenc prize in the ICSCS conference in 1994, Gold Metal from the Telesio-Galilei Academy of Science (2011) and President?s Appreciation Award from the Electrostatic Society of America (2011). Member of TWAS and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2014). Conferences: Frequent speaker in congresses, universities and schools, in Brazil and abroad.
