João Luiz Becker holds a Full Professor position in Technology and Data Science with FGV-EAESP. He holds a BS in Economy from UFRGS, a BS in Mathematics from UFRGS, an MS in Applied Mathematics from IMPA and a PhD in Management Science from UCLA. After that he has participated in the Colloquium on Participant Centered Learning at HBS and held a Pos Doctoral position at UPMF, France. Before joining FGV, he held a Full Professor position in Systems and Production with UFRGS for more than 40 years, where he headed PPGA (Graduate Program in Management), served as Vice Rector of Planning, Vice Dean and Dean of the Management School. He was also appointed as member of the Management and Economy Committee with FAPERGS (a State Funding Agency), head of the Management, Economy and Tourism Committee with CAPES (a Federal Funding Agency), member of the Economy, Management and Law Committee and member of the Technological Development and Innovative Extension Committee, both with CNPq (another Federal Funding Agency). As a researcher, he is ranked at SR level (the highest level) by CNPq, where he headed the Information and Decision Support Systems Research Group, acting mainly in its Modelling and Decision Lab. His main areas of interest are: decision support systems, applied quantitative methods, operations research, business analytics, data science, complex systems modelling, and IT impact. He has published hundreds of academic papers in journals and academic meetings in Brazil and abroad, such as Management Science, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management, International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, International Journal of Management and Enterprise Development, Industrial Management + Data Systems, International Journal of Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering, Decision Support Systems, International Journal of Human Capital and Information Technology Professionals, Agricultural Systems, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Systems Research and Behavioral Science, Information Technology & People and Journal of Information Systems, as well as in the Brazilian Journals Revista de Administração de Empresas, Revista de Administração Pública, Revista de Administração da USP, Revista de Administração Contemporânea, Revista Brasileira de Economia, Brazilian Finance Review, Brazilian Administrative Review, Ensaio, Inclusão Social, Gestão & Produção, Revista Eletrônica de Administração, Organização & Sociedade and Psico. He has advised more than a hundred students, mainly at graduate level. He is recipient of several academic awards, including being the advisor of two dissertations winning the prestigious Prêmio CAPES de Teses (a national dissertation contest), and one nomination for the same contest. He is also active in technological and managerial competences development, regularly consulting in the fields of management and complex systems modelling with business companies as well as with governmental organizations, such as IPERGS, Eletrobrás, CRT, Grupo Gerdau, Grupo RBS, Grupo Zottis, Imbralit, EBCT, Gol Linhas Aéreas, Brasken, Banrisul, Plásticos Zanatta, Instituto do Câncer Infantil, Maxion, Claro, Secretaria de Educação do Estado do RGS, T-Systems, Ford, Paramount Lansul, AES Sul, Way Amadeus, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Terramar, Riocell, Franklin Ford, Grupo Sonae and Souza Cruz. Currently he is doing research in managerial applications of text mining, recommendation systems, clustering, deep learning, customer lifetime valuation and Markov chain simulation.
