Electrical and Electronic Engineer from the Universidad de Mendoza (1985), MSc in Applied Mathematics (Statistics) from Associação Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA, 1990) and PhD in Computer Science from Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE, 1993). Since 2003 he is Full Professor at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas (Ufal). His research interest include data analysis, signal and image processing, models for complex systems and computational statistics. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters for the 2014-2018 term. In 2015 he was appointed IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS) "Distinguished Speaker". He has been invited to deliver plenary talks at Conferences, Universities and Scientific Societies in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, India, Israel and Uganda. Since 2019 he is member of the AdCom (Advisory Committee) da IEEE GRSS. In 2018 we received the IEEE GRSS Regional Leader Award for his "outstanding contributions toward enhancing scientific engagement in Latin America". He held the Vice-President of Research and Graduate Studies position at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas from January 2016 to January 2020. He holds a "Huashan Scholar" position from the Xidian University, Xi'an, China (2019-2021). Licensed from Ufal since May 2020, he is currently Professor of Statistics and Data Science, School of Mathematics and Statistics, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
