Gustavo P. Amarante-Mendes is a Full Professor and Vice-Dean of Immunology at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas, Universidade de São Paulo (ICB-USP). He acted as Secretary (2004-2005) and Vice-President (2012-2013) and is now the President (2016-2017) of the Brazilian Society of Immunology. He is the Vice-President of the Federation of the Societies for Experimental Biology (2017-2019). He was the President of the Biosafety Commission (2009-2013) and Coordinator (2011-2015) of the Post-graduate Program in Immunology of the ICB-USP. He obtained his Bachelor Degree at de Santo Amaro University (1984), and his MSc (1989) and PhD (1993) degrees in Immunology at the University of São Paulo. He was a Research Associate at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology (San Diego, CA) and Visiting Scientist at the Department of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Cell Death and Disease, a journal belonging to the NATURE Publishing Grou and the Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology and Frontiers in Immunology. He is also part of the Editorial Advisory Panel of the Biochemical Journal and is one of the Keystone Symposia Programming Consultants. He received many scientific awards, including the 2o Prêmio Oncologia Novartis - Saúde Brasil, Nature Review Cancer Award in 2007 (aluno de doutorado Daniel Diniz de Carvalho), Menção Honrosa at the Prêmio CAPES de Tese em 2009 (aluno Ricardo Weinlich) and the Premio CAPES de Tese em 2010 (aluno Daniel Diniz de Carvalho). He published around 100 scientific articles and has over 6.000 citations (Google Scholar). He has experience in Immunology, Molecular and Cellular Biology and Experimental Oncology, acting on the following subjects: cell death, apoptosis, signaling transduction, immuneregulation, oncogenes, chronic mieloid leukemia, melanoma.
