Dr. Briones received his BSc-MSc from the University of São Paulo, his PhD from the Federal University of São Paulo (1994) and a postdoctoral fellowship from New York University (1994-1996). He is a professor at the Federal University of São Paulo and an international research scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (USA) (2000-2005). He has experience in Genomics and Molecular Biology, with emphasis on evolutionary processes and bioinformatics. He participated as a principal investigator of the Xylella fastidiosa genome project-FAPESP, was a coordinator of the sequencing center in the human cancer genome project (FAPESP and Ludwig Institute) and the epileptic brain transcriptome. He is a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo, Life Fellow of the Galton Institute (United Kingdom), was a member of the steering committee of the Brazilian initiative on precision medicine (BIPMED) and is associate editor in bioinformatics and computational biology of Frontiers in Genetics and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and coordinator of the Center for Medical Bioinformatics at Escola Paulista de Medicina, Federal University of São Paulo.
