Graduado em Biologia, mestre em Ciências Biológicas e doutor em Biologia Comparada. Na graduação trabalhou com educação ambiental. Graduado atuou como professor do Ensino Básico e do Ensino Técnico. Como mestre atuou como pesquisador voluntário no Museu de Zoologia da UEL. No doutorado cumpriu estágio de pesquisa no National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Tem experiência em docência e nas linhas de pesquisa em sistemática de peixes sul-americanos (principalmente Tetraodontidae) e ictiofauna da bacia do Rio Tocantins-Araguaia.
