Birthplace: Brazil

Professor Coimbra, neuroanatomist, neuropsychopharmacologist, psychobiologist, is Physician (1988) by School of Medicine of the Federal University of Espírito Santo State (Brazil). Master in sciences (Magister Scientiae) (Neuropsychobiology field), Magna cum Laude (1991) by Ribeirão Preto School of Philosophy, Sciences and Literature of the University of São Paulo (USP), Doctor in Sciences (Scientiae Doctor) (Morphology-Cellular Biology field) by Ribeirão Preto school of Medicine of the University of são Paulo (FMRP-USP) (1995), he was Professor Doctor of the Department of Morphology (Neuroanatomy Lecturer) of the FMRP-USP from 1995-2000 (and Assistent professor from 1991 to 1995). After that, he has moved to the Department of Pharmacology of the FMRP-USP, and became "Livre Docente" (Faculty Member) by Department of Surgery and Anatomy of the FMRP-USP in 2010 (Examinations and Thesis performed in Neuroanatomy field), exerting the function of Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmacology of the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo. He has done Post-Doctorate in the Pain Imaging Neuroscience (PaIN) group of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics Department of the University of Oxford 09/01/2006 to 30/06/2006, and in the Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB) of the Clinical Neurology Department of the University of Oxford (Oxford, England, United Kingdom) from 01/07/2006 to 08/01/2007. In his current researches performed in the University of São Paulo (USP), his has been studying the neuroanatomical and neuropsychopharmacological bases of panic-like reactions, innate fear-induced antinociception, and the involvement of the pain endogenous modulatory system in the organization of other kinds of hipo-algesia, such as the post-ictal antinociception and the sweet substance-induced antinociception. Interactions between the striatum-nigral GABAergic disinhibitory and GABAergic nigro-collicular inhibitory neural pathways and the role of intramesencephalic/tecto-nigral endogenous opioid peptide-mediated pathways in the modulation of panic attacks have been the focus of the most recent approaches in Neurosciences by his team. In addition, the involvement of endocannabinoid-,serotonin-, noradrenaline-, and acetylcholine-mediated neurotransmissions in the elaboration of innate- and conditioned-fear, as well as in antinociceptive mechanisms have been also investigated. One of the most interesting interdisciplinary and translational approaches of his team is the study of neural bases of panic and innate fear-induced antinociception evoked by prey confronted with wild venomous and constrictor Brazilian snakes using innovative psychobiological models. Professor Coimbra and his collaborators have also been studying the neuroprotector, antipanic and antinociceptive effect of different fractions of Brazilian social wasps (Agelaia vicina; Polibya occidentalis) and spiders (Parawixia bistriata; Acanthoscurria gomesiana) venoms or endolynph in the forebrain and brainstem.
