Graduation in History (USP, 1980), Master's in Social Anthropology (Unicamp, 1986), PhD (1993), Associate Professor (USP, 1998), Title (USP, 2005). She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Anthropology (USP) and Global Scholar and Visiting Professor at Princeton (since 2011) and Affiliated Scholar Brazil Lab. Publisher of Companhia das Letras. She is a member of the IHGB and is a member of the board of Revista Etnográfica (Lisbon), Revista Penélope (Lisbon), Revista dos Cadernos de Pesquisa, Fundação Carlos Chagas, Revista Cadernos de Campo (FFLCH). She is a member of the Advisory Committee for Human Rights Whatch's Americas Division (2020), the Vladimir Herzog Institute, the Portuguese Language Museum and the Tornavoz Institute. She was visiting professor and researcher at the universities of Leiden, Oxford, Brown, Columbia ( as Tinker Professor), Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales. Received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2006/7); Júlio Ribeiro Medal (ABL, 2008); Commendation of the National Order of National Scientific Merit (2010), ?Mulher de Ideias? (J.B, 2008), member of the Advisory group - Harvard University (until 2012), had his lecture selected as "John H Parry Lecture at Harvard of 2010"; he received the Rui Barbosa Medal (FioCruz, 2017) and the Humboldt Award of research, given by the Alexandre von Humboldt Foundation, Germany 2022/23. Published with Lucia Stumpf and Carlos Lima A Batalha do Avaí (2013, ABL Award), with Adriana Varejão Pérola Imperfeita (2014, APCA Award), with Adriano Pedrosa catalog for the exhibition Histórias Mestiças (Cobogó and Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Jabuti for best book by arte, 2016), with Flávio Gomes Dictionary of Slavery and Freedom (2018, Jabuti) and Enciclopédia Negra (2021), Dancer of Death with Heloísa Starling (2020, Jabuti). With André Botelho, she organized: An enigma called Brazil (Jabuti Award 2013) and Agenda Brasileira in 2013.
