MD (1972) and PhD (1977) at Universidade Federal de São Paulo-UNIFESP, Brazil. Fellowship at Harvard Medical School (1978) and Visiting Full Professor in the Cornell Medical School (1993). He was Chief of the Renal Division; Head of the Department of Medicine and Dean of Post-Graduation and Research Programs at UNIFESP. He also was President of Fundação Oswaldo Ramos/Hospital do Rim e Hipertensão, President of Paulista Society of Nephrology, President of Brazilian Society of Clinical Investigation, President of Brazilian Society of Nephrology and Vice-President of LatinAmerican Society of Nephrology. He served as a Member of the Council of the International Society of Nephrology and Member of Comitees of this Society (Acute Renal Failure, Educational, and COMGAN). He was the President of World Congress of Nephrology (2007). Actually he is Full Professor of Medicine/Nephrology and Member of Brazilian Academy of Science and Brazilian Academy of Medicine. He works in internal medicine, especially in nephrology. The mean research areas are: glomerular hemodynamics and renal microcirculation, renal pathophysiology, acute kidney injury, renal stones, nephrotoxicity, urinary tract infection, natural medical products, cellular and molecular biology of renal cells, especially in glomerular mesangial cells and, stem cells.
