Birthplace: Costa Rica

Ian Castro-Gamboa holds a bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Organic Chemistry from the University of Costa Rica (1994) and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Federal University of São Carlos (2000). Completed a postdoctoral fellowship (2000-2003) in the area of electrochemically active compounds, utilizing the HPLC-EC interface to search for antioxidants in complex natural matrices. Currently serves as an Assistant Professor at the Chemistry Institute of São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho. Undertook a research internship abroad (2009-2010) at the University of Florida, USA, working on metabolomics and dereplication techniques using NMR and computational models aimed at the in situ elucidation of bioactive secondary metabolites. Has experience in the field of Chemistry, with a focus on evolution, chemosystematics, and spectroscopy, primarily working on the following topics: bioactive micromolecules from higher plants and microorganisms (especially those associated with the rhizosphere) and the development of coupled analytical and dereplication techniques (NMR) for the rational exploration of biodiversity. Currently serves as the Coordinator of the NMR Platform at IQ-UNESP, a founding member of LAMPS - Latin American Metabolic Profiling Society, and Vice-Director of the Chemistry Institute (IQ-UNESP) for the 2024-2028 term.
