graduate at Ciências Biológicas from Universidade de São Paulo (1976), master's at Botany from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1979) and ph.d. at Botany Department from University of Saint Andrews (1982). He is currently chairman of the biota/fapesp program at Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo. Has experience in Ecology, focusing on Ecology, acting on the following subjects: conservacao da biodiversidade, biodiversidade, biota/fapesp, ecofisiologia de especies tropicais and convencao sobre a diversidade biologica.
