Birthplace: Brazil

Since October 2013, Elaine Del-Bel has been a Full Professor of Physiology at FORP-University of Sao Paulo and an A1 Researcher at CNPQ. She has a master's and doctorate in Pharmacology from FMRP-USP. The postdoctoral fellowship was held in England at Manchester University. He performed short term internships and developed projects in collaboration with Prof. J. Nicholls, (SISSA-Trieste Italy); Prof. Francisco Fernandez de Miguel (Autonomous University of Mexico); Prof. W. Sthumer (Institute Max Planck for Experimental Medicine, Göttingen, Germany); Dr. R. Raisman Vozari (INSERM, Paris, France); Prof. F. Kirchhoff (University of Homburg- Saarland-Germany). Tested the hypothesis that nitric oxide, cannabidiol and antibiotics act as neuroprotective agents in Parkinson's disease and consequences of treatment with the dopamine precursor (Levodopa); in Schizophrenia using the pre-pulse inhibition reaction paradigm and the sensory-motor impairment produced by amphetamine. He showed that the blockade of nitric oxide synthesis enzymes as well as treatment with the antibiotic doxycycline, are neuroprotectective in damaging the dopaminergic system and decrease the deleterious effect of Levodopa treatment in animals with the parkinsonian syndrome. He also described the neuroprotective effect of cannabidiol and nitric oxide on amphetamine-induced sensory-motor impairment. Major ongoing projects in the lab are Study of Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatric Diseases; Experimental Parkinson's; Analysis of neuroinflammation in Levodopa-induced dyskinesia; Experimental Schizophrenia: the nitrergic and endocannabinoid system in sensory-motor function. He has 199 published papers (Web of Science -H-Index 36 Google). She has research projects funded by FAPESP and CNPQ CAPES and IBRO. He has received national and international awards. In 2018 she received the Bernice Grafstein Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Mentoring (SfN-USA). In 2020 she was identified as one of the 50 women protagonists of Science in Brazil, in the area of Biological Sciences (Open Box Project of Science held with support from Serrapilheira Institute). In 2014 she received the USP Award - PhD thesis, Health area (F. Padovan-Neto). He is a member of the Latin American Academy of Sciences (ACAL) since 2020. He has lectured/participated in international symposia: at the prestigious Royal Society (UK), Neurotoxicity Society (Chile, Spain), IBRO World Congress (RJ), University of Chicago (USA), UNAM- Mexico, Basal Ganglia Society (MX), University of Saarland-Germany, Max-Planck-Göttingen Institute, The Physiological Society (UK), Society for Neurosciences (USA); Dopamine2016/Austria, Central European Biomedical Congress, Poland. He is part of the IBRO-VLT team and has taught courses in Africa, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, India and Paraguay. She is President of the Federation of Latin America and Caribbean Societies for Neuroscience (FALAN).Vice-head of the Department Department of Basic and Oral Biology, University of Sao Paulo, Dentistry School of Ribeirao Preto.I am working with the World Women in Neuroscience, part of the Scientific Advocacy Committee. The goal of this committee is to promote the well-being and career advancement of WWN members by developing and implementing activities that advance the group?s mission and vision.
