Suzelei de Castro França, awarded with a Research Productivity Scholarship CNPq 1A - CA BI (h-index = 33), holds PhD in Biotechnology from the University of London - King's College London, Division of Life Sciences, MS in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Medicine USP/Ribeirão Preto, BA in Chemistry from the Faculty of Philosophy and Sciences USP/Ribeirão Preto. In 1968 started working at the Universidade de Ribeirão Preto UNAERP and in 1998 structured the Biotechnology Division of the University of Ribeirão Preto - UNAERP which was under her direction since its beginning. In 2001 the Graduate Program in Biotechnology at UNAERP (Master and Doctorate) was initiated under her coordination. She became responsible for the modules in Biochemistry; Cell and Tissue Cultures and Genetic Manipulation of in vitro Cultures. Dr Franca initiated her research activities in Plant Biotechnology at the Biotechnology Center CEBTEC/ESALQ-USP in 1984; acquired experience in Natural Product Chemistry developing projects at the Center for Natural Product Research at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences - USP/Ribeirão Preto and expanded her expertise in the field of Protein Chemistry as a researcher in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine USP/Ribeirão Preto. Since then, she has been developing and coordinating research projects covering: Production of secondary metabolites with pharmacological activity in tissue cultures of medicinal plants; Validation of the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines; Clonal propagation of species native to Brazil; Exploitation of plant-plant and plant-microorganism interactions for the production of bioactive substances; Molecular approaches for the genetic transformation of medicinal plants; Sequencing of genomic DNA of bacteria; Isolation, sequencing and expression of genes of specialized secondary metabolism of microorganisms and plants; Bioinformatics and functional genomics of bacteria and plant.
