He holds a degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Javeriana- Colombia (1980) and a PhD in Genetics of Microorganisms - University of Leeds- England (1988). Postdoctoral fellow at the University of São Paulo (1989-1990). Professor at the University of São Paulo in 1990, Associate Professor at the University of São Paulo in 2013. Visiting Professor at the James Cook University, Townsville, Australia 2007-2008. Has experience in Microbiology, with emphasis on Applied Microbiology, working mainly on the following topics: Actinobacteria with emphasis on the genera Streptomyces and Micromonospora, study of gene clusters and biosynthetic pathways (biosynthetic clusters) of antibiotics and bioactive molecules such as antitumor, antibacterial , antifungal and antiviral.
