Graduated in Medicine from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1974), master's in Biophysics and Biochemistry from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1976) and Ph.D. in Biophysics and Biochemistry from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1979) under the supervision of Dr. Leopoldo de Meis. Visiting Researcher at the Department of Genetics, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (1991-1992), with Dr. Carolyn W. Slayman. Scientist and professor in the Department of Medical Biochemistry, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, from 1979 to 1993, becoming full professor in that Department in 1992. Since 1994 is Full Professor at Departamento de Bioquímica, Instituto de Química da Universidade de São Paulo, and since November 2014 is Retired Full Professor, Senior Collaborator in that Department. At present is Scientific Leader in the Laboratory of Cell Cycle at Instituto Butantan, fellow of Fundação Butantan. Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 1986. Admitted to the class of Comendador of the National Order of the Scientific Merit of the Presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil in 2006.
