Andréa Dessen is a researcher at the Structural Biology Institute (IBS) in Grenoble, France, as well as a the Laboratório Nacional de Biociências (LNBio) de Campinas. She is also a professor at the Biology Institute at Unicamp (in graduate courses in Genetics and Molecular Biology). After obtaining her undergraduate diploma in chemical engineering (1987), she did a PhD at New York University (1987-1993) and two postdoctoral fellowships: the first one at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (1993-1995) and a second one at Harvard Medical School in Boston (1995-1997). Her research interests are focused on bacterial infection mechanisms, and include toxin secretion systems, virulence factors, and the bacterial cell wall formation pathway.
