Birthplace: Brazil

Bachelor in Chemistry from the State University of Campinas and PhD in Sciences (Organic Chemistry) from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He is currently a Full Professor at the São Carlos Chemistry Institute (IQSC) at the University of São Paulo (USP). He was a visiting professor at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) between 1997 and 1998, at the University of Utah (Salt Lake City) in 2002 and at the Life Sciences Institute at the University of Michigan (2012 and 2014-2515). He is a teacher and researcher in organic chemistry and coordinator of the Organic Chemistry of Biological Systems Group (QOSBio) at IQSC-USP. Research interests include the chemistry and biology of secondary metabolism of living organisms, primarily marine invertebrates and microorganisms, which include the discovery of bioactive biological molecules, the biosynthesis and synthesis of secondary metabolites, and marine and microbial biotechnology. The research carried out by QOSBio is developed in collaboration with researchers from the Federal University of São Carlos (São Carlos-SP), the Federal University of Paraná (Curitiba-PR), the Biosciences Institute of UNESP of Rio Claro (Rio Claro-SP) , from the University of Franca (UNIFRAN, Franca, SP), from ESALQ-USP, from the Institute of Chemistry of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Campinas, SP), from the Butantan Institute (SP) as well as with foreign researchers from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), the University of Illinois, Chicago (Chicago, USA), Baylor University (Wako, Texas, USA), North University Texas (DallasFort Worth metroplex, USA) and the University of California Los Angeles (Los Angeles, USA). He was a member of the Coordination of the BIOTA-FAPESP Program between 2009 and 2020, he was a member of the Management Committee of the SISBIOTA-CNPq Program between 2011 and 2020, and he was a member of the Management Committee of the CNPq Long-Term Ecological Research Program between 2013 and 2020. He was Director of the Natural Products Division of SBQ between 2014 and 2016. He was Director of the São Paulo Waldemar Saffioti Regional Interior Secretariat of SBQ between 2019 and 2023. He was a member of the editorial board of the magazines Química Nova, Natural Product Communications and the series Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products - Fortschritte der Chemie organischer Naturstoffe. He is currently a member of the editorial board of the Revista Brasileira de Farmacognosia, the review committee of the RSC Advances magazine and associate editor of the Journal of Natural Products. He received the Oswaldo Cruz Grupo SEM- Sigma Pharma Foundation Award for Health Science and Technology in 2000, the Matthew Suffness Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy in 2002 and the MCTI-FINEP-SiBBr Biodiversity Award in 2022. Biota-FAPESP addresses marine and coastal environments

Published in July 08, 2014 - Revista Pesquisa FAPESP - The second to last meeting of the Biota-FAPESP Conference Cycle addressed marine and coastal environments: areas composed of beaches, rocky intertidal zones, dunes and cliffs extended over a coastal strip of about 4,5 million square kilometers (km²), from Cape Orange, in Amapá State, to the unassuming Chuí Creek, on the Southern tip of Rio Grande do Sul. Little known, these environments harbor a great diversity of species. It is estimated that 2,2 million marine species exist, from which only 9% have been described. “This means that we ignore more than 90% of our coastal environments’ biodiversity”, said USP’s biologist Mariana Cabral de Oliveira, one of the invited speakers. [...] To know more about the potential of this underwater universe, composed of extremely rich and complex ecosystems, watch the video with excerpts of the talks, which also featured biologist Maria de los Angeles Gasalla and chemist Roberto Berlinck, both from USP.
