Adalberto Pessoa Jr has been a faculty member at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of São Paulo (USP) since 1998, teaching Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Bachelor's degree in Food Engineering from the Federal University of Viçosa (1984), a master's in Biochemical-Pharmaceutical Technology from USP (1991), and a Ph.D in Biochemical-Pharmaceutical Technology from USP (1995), which included a sandwich Ph.D. program in Germany at the Gesellschaft für Biotechnologische Forschung (GBF). He also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, in 2000. He obtained the title of Livre-Docente in 2001 and has been a Full Professor (MS-6) since 2006. He currently serves as Vice-Head of the Department of Biochemical-Pharmaceutical Technology at FCF/USP (term ending in 2025). He was Vice-Dean of FCF/USP from 2014 to 2018, Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Biochemical-Pharmaceutical Technology (20062014), and Chair of the Program Coordination Committee (20092014) and the Graduate Studies Committee of FCF/USP (20132014). He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology (BJM) from 2008 to 2014 and as Associate Editor for the Industrial Microbiology section from 2006 to 2021. He was President of the Brazilian Society for Microbiology (20092013) and Vice President of the Latin American Association of Microbiology (20102014). He also coordinated the Industrial Microbiology Division of the Brazilian Society for Microbiology across various terms over the past 25 years. He has supervised masters and doctoral students in the Graduate Program in Industrial Biotechnology at EEL/USP (19952000 and since 2023), the Biochemical-Pharmaceutical Technology Program at FCF/USP (since 1998), the Interdepartmental Biotechnology Program at ICB/USP (since 2000), and the Professional Masters Program in Innovation in Diagnostics, Drug, and Pharmaceutical Development at ICB-FCF/USP. From 2009 to 2014, he coordinated the Brazilian Network of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology under the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT). Professor Pessoa Junior has been a faculty member in the Ph.D. program in Chemical Engineering at the University of Genoa, Italy, since 2006; a Visiting Professor in the Masters in Renewable Energy at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico (20082013); and in the Ph.D. Program in Molecular Biology and Applied Biotechnology at the University of La Frontera, Chile, since 2011. Senior Visiting Professor at Kings College London (KCL) since 2020 and has coordinated the Double PhD Program with KCLs Institute of Pharmaceutical Science since 2017. His research focuses on pharmaceutical biotechnology and bioprocesses. He holds 11 patents in biotechnology and has authored over 355 publications, including 301 articles in international journals indexed by the ISI Web of Science, with over 8341 citations and an h-index of 43 (Nov/2024). On Google Scholar, his h-index is 42, with 6,412 citations. Professor Pessoa Junior has been listed among the "Top 2 Most Influential Scientists in the World" for the years 2020, 2021, and 2024 in a study published by Elsevier and researchers at Stanford University (in two categories: career-long impact and single-year contributions for 2020, 2021, and 2022). He has also published six books in three languages, including Purificação de Produtos Biotecnológicos (1st and 2nd editions), Biotecnologia Farmacêutica, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology: A Focus on Industrial Application, and Purificación de Productos Biotecnológicos (in Spanish). Supervised 22 masters, 31 PhD's, and 25 postdoctoral fellows.Consultant for Eurofarma for biopharmaceuticals and a partner in Biobreyer RD Ltda and Bioinsumos Brasil RD Ltda.Owner of EngBiotec, a consultancy firm specializing in pharmaceutical biotechnology.
