The study of redox processes has high potential to elucidate integrative mechanisms, due to the ubiquity and strength of their effects. Many studies involve the role of redox mechanisms in diseases. However, the complexity of this field has increased concerning structures, structure-function relations, methods, molecular and sub-cellular pathology of redox-regulated proteins, genomics, pr…
The use of light as a therapeutic modality has recently become an attractive mode of therapy due to the development of efficient and affordable light sources, together with its low invasiveness and low systemic toxicity. Consequently, photo-activated drugs (photosensitizers-PS), are playing key roles in the present clinical portfolio (in a modality called Photodynamic Therapy-PDT). Althou…
Globalization and climate change enhances the transmission of life-threatening diseases through mosquitoes from the genre Aedes and Anopheles. The problem is increasing steadily both in America and Europe. The usage of chemical means for the control of mosquitoes and larvae leads to increased resistance to common insecticides. Furthermore, insecticides are a source of side effects and hea…
The present project will contribute to the knowledge of singlet oxygen formation sensitized by non-planar aromatic hydrocarbons and to the knowledge of pathways for metabolic degradation of photodynamic therapy (PDT) sensitizers and to the metabolic degradation of natural plant pigments. Both themes are related to fundamental studies of chemical or photochemical reactivity, but at the sam…

Protecting human skin from exposure to the sun is a complex issue that involves ambivalent aspects of the interaction of light with tissues. Visible radiation causes redox imbalance and cell damage, although it is not yet considered a class I carcinogen, such as UVA. One of the problems that hinders the proper characterization of the effects of visible radiation is the lack of molecular k…
The skin plays an important role in maintaining the body's homeostasis, offering an effective barrier against external agents, including solar radiation. Excessive exposure to the sun causes uncontrolled production of reactive chemical species, such as electronically excited states, free radicals and many other oxidizing species, disturbing redox signaling and homeostasis and culminating …

This project aims to study the photophysical properties of three types of platinated tetrapyridylporphyrins, coordinated in its porphyrin ring to three different metals: Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II). Along with that, we shall provide experiments to determine the phototoxicity of these three compounds, analysing the membrane damage generated by these molecules after irradiation and comparing …

The project submitted here entitled "Ruthenium(II) complexes containing quinone based ligands to improve membrane damage and cause PDT response" is part of the postdoctoral project (2019/03195-3) and is related to a collaboration Project between Professor Mauricio da Silva Baptista (Universidade de São Paulo - Brazil) and Professor Claudia Turro (The Ohio State University). The strategy i…
Radical-mediated oxidations are expected to play an important role on photosensitized oxidations occuring in photodynamic therapy and cutaneous photoaging. Given the role of lipid photo-oxidation in these photobiological processes, in this project we aim to study the formation of lipid peroxyl radicals in model membranes, by using of BODIPY-a-tocopherol off/on fluorescent probes. These pr…
