Abstract

In this research, we intend to study through theoretical and practical approaches, five recordings of saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil in which he plays Brazilian songs. From the theoretical side our approach will be based on the vocal gesture analysis proposed by Regina Machado. Using this model implies relating the expressive resources, ways to change the melody and improvisation and arrangement strategies choices to the meanings generated by the relation between melody and lyrics of the songs. After this survey of the interpretive design of each recording, we seek to detect recurrences and peculiarities in this saxophonist¿s approach to Brazilian songs. On the level of practice, supported by this theoretical understanding of the recordings, we proposed three ways of appropriation and interaction with the performance of Victor Assis Brasil: 1) reinterpretation of the recordings; 2) proposal of unprecedented interpretative project using recurring features and procedures raised by analysis; 3) proposed interpretive project freely influenced by acquired memory with playback the transcripts and incorporating interpretative resources detected in the analyzes (AU)
