Dense thin layers for the next generation of solid oxide fuel cells deposited by advanced PVD techniques

Abstract

The present research proposal aims to get the necessary funding for a short-term pos-doc at the Jülich Research Center (FZJ, Germany). The focus of the proposed research is the development of ceramic materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). SOFCs are potentially the most efficient device for the direct conversion of chemical energy of a fuel into electricity. Such devices have attracted a great deal of attention due to their ability to operate with a diverse array of fuels and the possibility to be designed in different configurations for specific applications. In particular, the research work to be conducted at the FZJ is related to the deposition of thin dense layers of electrolytes over planar anode-supported SOFCs by bias-voltage assisted physical vapor deposition (PVD). The main objective is to optimize the experimental parameters of the voltage assisted PVD for the fabrication of homogeneous functional layers that allow for the operation of high-performance SOFCs. The FZJ is considered one of the top research and development institutions involved with the SOFC technology, as inferred from the scientific publications, patents, and technology transfer to companies, such as Siemens and BMW, along with several international collaborations. The subject of the present research proposal has been defined by the pos-doc supervisor (Dr. H. P. Buchkremer) and consists in an excellent opportunity to make important advances in the scientific career of the proponent and to pave the way for future collaboration with an important research center, which can involve the exchange of technology and students, being both very important for the development of this technology in Brazil.
