In vitro comparative study of endodontically treated teeth restored with intraradicular prefabricated fiber glass or cast metallic posts after thermomechanical cycling.

Abstract

The restoration of endodontically treated teeth was always a challenge for professionals. These teeth in such a way present considerable quantitative reduction of its coronary tissue by previous caries, fractures, inadequate restorations, as how by access to the pulpar chamber and root canals. For many years, endodontically treated teeth were traditionally restored with cast metal post which had the good mechanical properties of dental alloys. The biggest disadvantage of this post type is the tensions concentration in the roots. Moreover, the coloration of these materials can cause problems when metal-free esthetic restorations are used. Currently, amongst the materials used to restore endodontically treated teeth, the fiber glass posts have increased in popularity due the favorable mechanical properties allied to the good esthetical results. Ahead the possibility to use different materials and techniques to restore endodontically treated teeth, the professional remain in doubt about how to restore them. So, this study test the first hypothesis that endodontically treated teeth restored with different post systems has significant difference in their resistance to thermomechanical cycling made by different periods. Additionally, as second hypothesis, if exist significant difference in the leakage occurrence after the total cycling period. The post systems used will be: fiber glass and cast metal post. These posts will be luted with dual resin cement in tooth roots and over that metallic total crowns will be placed. After the crowns luting, the samples will be submitted to the thermomechanical cycling test. Over 500,000 cycles will be carried, and at each 100,000 cycles the samples will be visually verified for integrity, as in clinical practice. After the test accomplishment, the samples will be placed in fucsin basic solution for 24 hours; after this period will be included, cutted and the leakage areas will be analyzed under optical microscopy. The obtained data will be statistically analyzed.
