Abstract

Increased recognition of Parvovirus B19 (B19) and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) as human pathogens causing severe diseases in immunocompromised patients has resulted in intensive efforts to understand their pathogenesis, to improve the diagnostic algorithms that are applied in the monitoring of high-risk patients and blood products as well as to elucidate the nature of the genomic mutations that could lead to a serious diseases and organ dysfunction. While many efforts are concentrated in clarifying above mentioned problems among patients with various transplantations or immune deficiencies, up to day there is limited data for the behaviour of these two viral agents among patients with haemoglobinopathies and haemophilia. These patients present specific cohort, which is highly susceptible to opportunistic viral infections due to the impaired function of the immune system leading in most of the cases to serious consequences. The development of new diagnostic as well as sequencing approaches would reveal specific aspects of the molecular pathogenesis of Parvovirus B19 and the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) among patients with haemaglobinopathies and hemophilia and would help the clinicians for the fight against severe complications induced by these agents.
