Since the 90's the centers of the big Brazilian cities have been reconsidered as strategic areas by the urbanistic plans and generally dealt by specific plans named as of "rehabilitation, requalification or revitalization, through the implementation of programs and projects linked to the branch policies, like the culture, transportation and, more recently, the habitation ones. Even though these central areas transformation processes may be generalized to the big São Paulo state cities, its effects on land use and appropriation are specific ones, related to the development characteristics of each Center related to the city as a whole. The work will have its base in the comprehension of the historic development issues of the center of Campinas, but it will aim mainly the analysis of its potentialities and its present problems for the definition of the parameters for its rehabilitation with emphasis in the possibility of recovery of the center as a place of permanent public living together and traffic, and also in the rehabilitation of its buildings into habitations and the complementary uses linked to it. With this in mind, the land use, occupation and value will be analyzed, as well as the future measures and interventions proposed in the projects, programs and plans for the city and/or for this specific area.
