Safety climate: Evaluation of the perception of health professionals at surgical and medical unity of a hospital in the southeast region of Brazil

Abstract

The increasing concern about the patient safety has facing health institutions to adopt safety culture models, also used as a synonym for Safety Climate. The culture is defined as a product of values, attitudes, perceptions and skills to group and individual, which determine a behavior and commitment pattern to the safety management of the institution. The safety climate measurement in healthcare institutions, using scales and questionnaires, is a method which has been used since the early 80s. This survey aims to evaluate the professional perceptions about the patient safety climate at surgical and medical unity of a hospital in the southeast region of Brasil. It will correlate the values obtained in scale - Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) - Short Form 2006 and validated to Portuguese by LIMA (2009) - with the Patient Safety Indicators and between the domains and each one with the total score of the questionnaire. The patient safety indicators were developed by AHRQ (U.S.A) as a strategy for assessing and monitoring adverse events (AE). The study will be conducted after the approval of the Ethics Committee of the hospital. Data analysis will be performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 15.0. The instrument will provide information for the institution about the key factors that need to be improved for a safe care without harm to the patient.
