Effect of Photodinamic Therapy (PDT) in Denture Stomatitis: a "in vivo" study.

Abstract

Denture Stomatitis (DS) is an inflammatory reaction in oral mucous under removable prostheses, it can represent acute or chronic reactions to the Candida species and bacteria infection, for prosthesis materials or traumas. The indiscriminate use of antifungal has been resulting resistance of the Candida sp. and, new alternatives of treatment have been appearing for the oral candidose. The application of the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has been studying the pathogens microorganisms' inactivation for the human. PDT is therapy that uses visible light in a specific wavelength to activate the photosensitizer (PS) in the presence of oxygen. The exposure of PS to light results in the formation of oxygen species, as singlet oxygen and free radicals, causing death of the yeast. The present study has the objective to evaluate, "in vivo", the PDT action on Candida sp. in patients with DS that looking for FOUSP treatment. The methylene blue associated to the diode laser will be used (Quantum, EccoFibras, Campinas, Brazil) with continuous emission of 660 nm and with 100 mW potency. The contribution of this work is to present the possibility of C. albicans decreasing in DS, verifying the effectiveness the use of PDT in an irritations, lesions and inflammations reduction in patients' palate.
