Abstract

Caries is a bacterial disease which results in the teeth dissolution due to the action of acids produced by the bacteria metabolism acting on the diet fermentable carbohydrates. It reaches over 97% of Brazilian population and, more than cause teeth loss, caries can result in more serious pathologies such as stomatitis, gingivitis, afta and other even more serious, like oral cancer. Used as adjuvants in the prevention of this pathology, the available oral care products are not totally satisfactory due to the bacterial resistance and side effects related to their active compounds. In this sense, scientific investigations aiming to discover new anticariogenic substances are needed. Belonging to the Lamiaceae family and characterized as an abietane diterpenes source, Sage (Salvia officinalis) is cultivated in many parts of the world due to its culinary and medicinal importance. There are several biological activities related to this vegetable that can be found in the literature, such as: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, spasmolytic and cholinergic. However, among all these activities, the antimicrobial can be highlighted due to the large number of published studies related to this vegetable and to the diterpenes - their most characteristic metabolites. Aiming to obtain new anticariogenic compounds, it is proposed in this project the isolation of Salvia officinalis (commercially available) constituents and the evaluation of their antimicrobial potential against a panel of the main cariogenic bacteria.
