The human identification by DNA analysis uses the genetic profile of an individual based on the combination of diverse markers that are inherited of its ancestors. These markers are generally differences in sequences of nuclear DNA between individuals (polymorphisms). In some cases, however, the analysis of the nuclear DNA cannot be applied. It occurs when the DNA sample is degraded or in cases which the biological material does not content nuclear DNA. In these cases, the mitocondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis is the choice method. However, inside one individual can exist different mtDNA populations, phenomenon called heteroplasmy. The objective of this work is to study the frequency of heteroplasmy in extracted mtDNA from hair, when compared with mtDNA contained in the blood of the same individuals. For it, hypervariable regions HV1 and HV2 in hair and blood samples from 50 individuals inhabitants of Grande São Paulo will be sequenced. It intends to use the results of the project in the aid of the elucidation of forensic cases for the scientific police, diffusing the analysis of the DNA mt in the Brazilian context.
