Cross-cultural adaptation of The Child-Initiated Pretend Play Assessment (ChIPPA)

Abstract

Nowadays playing is considerate by American Occupational Therapy Association as one of the eminent children’s role; it makes possible the motor coordination, cognitive skills, language and social interaction development contributing for the integral and healthy children’s development. The Occupational Therapy study and act on the human making and because of this playing can be considerate as both a resource and objective of the intervention. The playing assessment is fundamental for measuring and detection aspects that need intervention. Thus, is fundamental the use of specific assessment’s instruments to assess the children’s play behavior. Assessment’s instruments used in other countries need to pass to the cross-cultural adaptation for its content have validity to be used in an other country or culture. Therefore, this study intend to translate and adapt The Child Pretend Play Assessment for the Brazilian culture, which is an useful instrument in understanding how the children aged 3 to 7 years are developing in their ability to initiate and organize their play, following the cross-cultural adaptation criterions that also includes carrying out the pre-test with children of this age group, contributing for understanding the children’s play behavior and for carrying out others assessment’s studies using this instrument.
