Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a mouthwash with calcium before immersion in slurry of fluoridated toothpaste on erosion of bovine enamel and dentin in vitro. During 1 day, bovine enamel and dentin blocks will be submitted to erosive challenges performed 4 times a day and between the challenges, the specimens will be remineralized by artificial saliva (60 min at 37° C). The study includes the following treatments: rinse with calcium followed by tooth brushing with a fluoridated dentifrice (BCa + DF), rinse with calcium followed by tooth brushing with a placebo dentifrice (BCa + DP), rinse with deionized water followed by tooth brushing with a fluoridated dentifrice (BP + DF) and rinse with deionized water followed by tooth brushing with a placebo dentifrice (BP + DP). The blocks (n = 20 per dental substrate and type of treatment) will be immersed in 10 mL deionized water or solution of calcium lactate 150 mM during 1 min, under agitation, 2xday. Then, they will be immersed in dentifrice slurry (3g: 10 mL deionized water) during 1 min and dried with absorbent paper. The erosion will be performed with a cola type soft drink (30mL, 10 min). After erosion, the blocks will be immersed in 10 mL deionized water or solution of calcium lactate 150 mM during 1 min, under agitation, dried with absorbent paper and then immersed in the dentifrice slurry(3 g: 10 mL of deionized water) during 1 min. This cycle will be consecutively repeated 4 times. The response variable will be the profilometry (µm) analysis. The data will be checked for normality and homogeneity (Bartlett's test / Kolmogorov and Smirnov), and the most appropriate statistical test will be performed (p <0.05).
