Abstract

The city of São Paulo is going through a situation of opposition: between built density and urban infrastructure and populational density. In such context, while the tall residential and commercial buildings in the downtown area - which have better infrastructure (particularly public transportation) - have been abandoned by the population in an alarming fashion over the last decades, the city outskirts have been experiencing an opposite process, that is, urban design and public infrastructure have been growing without proper planning. The goal is to contribute with initiatives for the revitalization and reoccupation of the downtown area in order to improve the quality of life of the people from São Paulo and to generate more urban sustainability. Therefore, the research named: "Architecture and ergonomic and thermic comfort of tall residential buildings from 1930 to 1960 in the city of São Paulo" will start from the study "Private promotion of economical habitation and Modern Architecture from 1930 to 1964", organized by Maria Ruth Amaral Sampaio. From samples of buildings will point out architectural aspects of this group of tall residential buildings, considering the ergonomic and thermic performance of the habitational units. The focus is the future development of environmental performance evaluations which will hopefully provide with technical support for architectural and technological rehabilitation projects for these buildings and for the reoccupation of the downtown area and its surroundings.
