Abstract

The Brazilian beef cattle productive chain is dealing with an increase in the introduction of Bos taurus breeds (adapted and non-adapted) and in the use of crossbreeding programs, with the objective of improving productivity, quality and production system efficiency. However, there is little understanding about the adaptability and the productive responses of those genetic groups as well as their crossbred products under the Brazilian environment and management conditions. Thus, the aim in this project is to study characteristics and behavioural, morphological, physiological and molecular responses related to adaptability of Nelore, Angus x Nelore and Senepol x Nelore cattle. The project will be conducted at the Southeast-Embrapa Cattle (CPPSE), in São Carlos, SP. A total of 15 heifers from each genetic group, aging approximately 14 months, raised in intensive rotational grazing systems will be evaluated. Ingestive behaviour, temperament in the corral and in the squeeze chute, physiological data (rectal, skin and hair temperatures and sweat and respiratory rates) and analyses of the skin, hair and sweat glands associated with termorregulation mechanisms of the animals submitted to heat stress during the hottest days of summer will be evaluated, and meteorological data will also be registered (ambient temperature, relative humidity, rain precipitation, wind velocity and black globe temperature). In addition, the expression of two genes from the HSP (heat shock proteins) family will also be evaluated in blood samples of all animal, submitted to the heat stress test. All these data will be related with animals’ productive and reproductive performances. (AU)
