Development of latex films for use as an occlusive membrane in guided bone regeneration

Abstract

This work consists of the development of natural latex films, derivative of the Hevea brasiliensis, for use as barrier membrane in guided bone regeneration. Latex is a biocompatible material with high mechanic resistance. Initial tests in vivo had demonstrated that the latex is an excellent candidate for this type of application. In this work, two types of films will be developed. For the first one, different thermal treatments will be used during the polymerization process in order to promote the formation of pores in the membrane with different diameters. Proteins that accelerate bone regeneration will be added to this membrane with the proposal of its use as a controlled system of protein release (drug delivery) in addition of function as barrier mechanics. In the second membrane the process of vulcanization through the FeDETC will be enhanced. The FeDETC is a spin trapp of NO (Nitric Oxide) and our objective is to add this radical to the membrane. It is already known that NO is the endothelium derived relaxing and probably will influence the bone regeneration.This process of vulcanization by FeDETC was tested by our research group and is confidential information.
