In order to bond to dentin by formation of the hybrid-layer most of the current adhesive systems rely on Kanca III's wet bonding technique in which water plays an important role. Water stabilizes demineralized dentin matrix in an expanded state thus allowing hydrophilic monomers to occupy the porosities left by acid demineralization. As dentin wetness control during bonding is a critical issue, residual water may hump resin infiltration or chemically combine with adhesive monomers, therefore leading to structural problems such as bonding deficiency, nanoleakage and premature degradation. The aim of the present research project is to investigate the treatment of demineralized dentin matrix with different crosslinking agents and their role on resin-bonding to relatively dry dentinal surface. They comprise natural (proanthocyanidin and genipin) and synthetic (glutaraldehyde) crosslinkers, and dentin bonding primers will be formulated with these agents. Human third molars will be selected for bonding and demineralized dentin will be treated with the different crosslinking primers prior to bond with an experimental adhesive system. Specimens will be evaluated for bond strength by the microtensile method and data will be subjected to statistical analysis with 5% of significance level. In addition, specimens will be prepared to scanning electron microscopy for hybrid layer examination in respect to identify collagen fibrils not enveloped by adhesive resin. The one-year time-effect on bonding using the different collagen crosslinkers will be also evaluated.
