Solitons show unique properties and high potential for applications and, hence, have been one of the most exciting topics of research in modem nonlinear science. This research project is devoted to the theoretical investigation of soliton dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensate and magnetic thin films in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science. In Bose-Einstein condensate we plan to study bright solitons for attractive atomic interaction and gap solitons for repulsive atomic interaction and for a periodic optical-lattice potential. The trapping periodic optical-lattice potential is routinely created in laboratory from a standing-wave polarized laser beam. Both bright and gap solitons have been observed in experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates. Another interesting example of physical systems where solitons have been created and studied experimentally is in the propagation of magnetostatic waves in thin films. We shall also study these magnetic solitons in thin films. In both Bose-Einstein condensate and in thin films, the investigation will be based on the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and the use of the Euler-Lagrange variational approach and the split-step Fourier method for its solution.
