The student will contribute to the project "Silent Aircraft", which with the cooperation of researchers from different institutions, aims to develop new modelling tools and numerical methods to simulate the generation and transmition of noise on airplanes. This higher-scale project is tied to the PICTA programme - Innovation in Science and Aerospace Technology Programme - whose objective is to investigate and develop improved solutions to the problem of external noise present on aircrafts. It essentially foresees the development of analysis methods which will allow the researchers to estimate the generation and transmission of noise in flight conditions. The study methods are different for each research centre, involving Computational Aeroacoustics (CAA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, analytical and empirical models, and flight and wind tunnel tests. Therefore, the combined results of all these studies will give the researchers a more complete vision on aeroacoustic phenomena. The focus of the student will be on the first approach; more precisely, the obtention of certain aerodynamic results which are necessary for the aeroacoustic analysis using a high-precision method, specifically, the Spectral Element Method. This method will be studied and applied for two situations of interest of the project Silent Aircraft which are commonly found in the literature as well: flow around a resonant cavity and around an airfoil with slats. Once the results are available, it will still be possible to evaluate if the behaviour of the solutions follows what is described, especially qualitatively, in the references, before submitting them to the other researchers.
