The main objective of this research is the analysis of the phonological adaptations which occur with proper nouns of foreign origin, when they have entered the Archaic Portuguese, from the study of the 420 Alfonso X's Cantigas de Santa Maria, a collection of religious poems from the last quarter of the 13th century. This project aims to bring contribution to the determination of the relations between language change and phonological identity, investigating the limits between what is and what is not (or what was and what was not) considered "Portuguese" (of "Galician-Portuguese", in the medieval period), from the point of view of the sound, viewed by the native speakers of the language, in an ancient period of the temporal continuum of the language.
