Abstract

RESUME Background: Expression of HIV-1 coreceptors on the surface of various human cells is believed to influence the dynamics of viral tropism throughout the course of HIV-1 infection. There is a concern that CXCR4 co-receptor usage could provide an advantage for replication and transmission to drug-resistant strains. In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of virus co-receptor usage in a cohort of recent HIV seroconverters in São Paulo, Brazil, and HIV subtypes. Methods: Genomic DNA will be exracted from blood samples of 110 HIV-1seroconverter. V3 loop amino acid sequences at the time of initial diagnosis will be analysed for prediction of coreceptor usage.
