Abstract

The use of oral mouthrinses containing active antimicrobial substances has been proposed as an important way for reducing the formation of supragingival dental biofilm when used concomitantly with mechanical cleaning of the oral cavity. With the increased prevalence of microbial resistance to conventional antiseptics, attention is now focused on the use of natural antimicrobial components. Among the various plant species described with antimicrobial activity, the Rosemary-of-Field (Baccharis dracunculifolia DC) showed significant activity on cariogenic factors of Streptococcus mutans in vitro, inhibiting the acidogenic character and showing as an important bacteriostatic and bactericidal against of these microorganisms. The microemulsão is a modern system to drugs release that can solubilize both water soluble compounds as liposuction. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to evaluate clinically mouthwash formulation based on microemulsion, with both preventive and therapeutic purposes, containing the hidroetanolic extract of the leaves and essential oil from Baccharis dracunculifolia, so that the data could strengthen the proposed application of this raw material plant in formulations for dental use
