The Parliament of the Mercosur was established in December 2005 in order to encourage the democratization of this process of regional integration and contribute to the consolidation of the Customs Union. Democratization is critical to create channels of representation of organized groups of society, provide legitimacy to the integration process and promote compensatory policies for sectors adversely affected by integration. However, the creation of the Mercosur Parliament by itself does not guarantee the democratization of the process of integration, because it has to assume duties consistent with that role, as occurs in the process of integration of the European Union. The purpose of this research is to collect information to examine how the politicians acted throughout the process of integration of Mercosur, both within the Joint Parliamentary Committee (CPC) as well as at the Parliament itself.(AU)
